A good supplier also doesn't laugh when you ask a basic question like “is sodium hydroxide a acid?”

Quick answer: no. Sodium hydroxide is a base. It's an alkali. It dissociates into Na+ and OH- in water. If you're buying chemicals, you shouldn't have to trust your supplier's memory on that one. You should be able to open the SDS.

I'm not 100% sure the reseller's density error was intentional. It could have been laziness. But it shows something important: if a supplier can't provide accurate documentation, you can't compare their price to anyone else's price.

Conclusion: On technical documentation, Route A wins again. But only if you actually read the documents. I've met procurement people who ignore the SDS because they're “not chemists.” That's how you end up with under-sized tanks and failed batches.

Dimension 3: Pricing Transparency – The Cheapest Quote Is Not the Lowest Cost

Now let's talk about money, because this is the dimension where I disagree with a lot of people. I've learned to ask “what's not included?” before asking “what's the price?”

In 2021, I compared a quote from a large supplier and a quote from a smaller reseller. The reseller's price was about 28% lower. It looked great. Conclusion: On pricing transparency, Route A wins. That's the opposite of what you'd expect if you only look at the purchase order.

So, Should You Buy From Mitsubishi Chemical or a Smaller Supplier?

It depends. If you need a standard chemical in bulk and your process is already validated, a good specialty distributor can work. You just have to verify every spec. Not once. Every order.

If you need a chemical with a name that makes sense, consistent quality, and documentation you can defend in an audit, go with a large integrated supplier like Mitsubishi Chemical Group Corporation. You'll pay more per gallon or per kilogram, but you'll usually pay less per successful order.

The key is to ask the right questions. If you can't answer “is sodium hydroxide a acid?” or “what is the density of 70% nitric acid?” about a product you've already ordered, stop the process and check the SDS. If a supplier cannot answer those questions, or won't give you a straight answer, walk away.

That's the checklist I now use. It's made me slower at the front end and much faster at the back end. And it has saved me a lot more than the $47,000 I wasted before I figured it out.
