1. Is Mitsubishi Chemical the Same as Mitsubishi Electric?

No, and the confusion is fair. The three-diamond logo shows up on cars, elevators, televisions, and chemical drums—it looks like one giant corporation. It's actually a family of independently operated companies. Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (MCC) is the chemicals and advanced materials arm, and one of Japan's largest chemical manufacturers. Why should a buyer care? The legal entity on the agreement determines invoicing, liability, and who answers the phone when a shipment goes sideways. 3. Hydrochloric Acid Characteristics: What Should a Buyer Check?

  • Concentration. Commercial grades run from 30% to 37%. At 37%, the acid fumes—the vapor is corrosive to nearby equipment, so ventilated storage isn't optional.
  • Iron content. Technical grades often contain trace iron that turns the liquid pale yellow. That tint matters when acid contacts equipment that needs to stay stain-free.
  • Grade selection. Technical, food, and reagent grades allow different impurity levels. Match the grade to the job; over-specifying just adds cost without adding value.
  • Heat of dilution. Mixing HCl with water releases significant heat. The rule: add acid to water, never water to acid.

The grade conversation is where most procurement mistakes happen, because the price gap between technical and reagent grades is big enough to tempt a buyer into over-saving. When I took over purchasing in 2020, I ordered the cheapest hydrochloric acid I could find for a rinsing loop. The plant manager caught orange staining on the fittings within two weeks. Trace iron in technical grade. (Mental note: read the spec sheet before clicking buy, not after.)

4. How Is Hydrochloric Acid Made?

If you search "how to make hydrochloric acid" and land on the salt-and-sulfuric-acid reaction, you're reading 19th-century chemistry. Commercial production today follows three routes:

  1. Direct synthesis. Chlorine and hydrogen react to form hydrogen chloride gas, which is absorbed into demineralized water. This route yields the highest-purity acid, used in food and pharmaceutical work.
  2. Byproduct recovery. Making PVC, polyurethane isocyanates, and chlorinated solvents liberates hydrogen chloride as a byproduct. It's captured, purified, and sold as commercial hydrochloric acid—and it supplies a large share of the market.
  3. Mannheim process. Salt reacts with sulfuric acid at high temperature. This was the workhorse process for more than a century; today it accounts for only a small share.

Here's the thing most people don't realize: much of the hydrochloric acid in warehouse racks right now was born as a byproduct of producing something else. That leads to the question nobody asks but everyone should.

5. Is Byproduct Hydrochloric Acid Lower Quality?

This is the legacy belief I most want to correct. "Byproduct" sounds like waste, and fifty years ago it often was. Acid recovered from chlorination off-gases could contain unreacted chlorine, organic residues, and erratic strength.

That era is over. Modern purification—scrubbing, stripping, distillation—produces hydrochloric acid that meets technical, food, and even pharmaceutical specifications. "Byproduct" tells you about the acid's origin, not its quality. The certificate of analysis is what defines quality. By the same token, don't assume direct-synthesis acid is automatically right for every job. It's purer, but it costs more. Unless your process actually needs that purity, you're paying for a certificate you'll never use.

And here's the lesson I learned the expensive way: check the CoA against the specification on your purchase order, not against the supplier's datasheet. We didn't have a formal verification process for that. It cost us when a 31% HCl shipment arrived for a requisition that specified 37%. The vendor's certificate matched their standard grade, but not our PO. The line supervisor flagged it before use, but we ate the return freight and restocking fee—which wiped out the savings from the lower unit price.

Now I check three numbers on every incoming HCl certificate: concentration, iron, and appearance. That's it.

6. Is Cleanroom Epoxy Resin Flooring Worth the Premium?
